Gilbert Stuart painted the original portrait in 1804 while Madison was Secretary of State, and it was engraved shortly after Madison's election to the presidency. The printing was credited to C.P. Harrison, and it was advertised in Washington's National Intelligencer on 17 February. Three days later, President Jefferson bought a copy, writing in his memorandum book "Pd. for a print of Mr. Madison." Stauffer 817. One in OCLC (American Antiquarian Society) and none traced at auction.
