Hayes over Samuel Tilden: "Perjury, fraud, bulldozing, intimidation, &c., of no avail. The country is safe, and the Union is preserved." The defeated Tilden is depicted saying farewell "to an unappreciative public," departing for a foreign land by balloon, and as an "old rat looking for a hole to crawl into."
