A broadside from the first popular presidential election in the United States, in which Washington ran unopposed under the newly ratified Constitution. On 13 September 1788, Congress passed a resolution declaring that electors should be appointed. This 12 November 1788 Act of the New Hampshire legislature declared 15 December 1788 as the date to elect the state's three representatives to the Federal Congress and to appoint the state's representatives to the electoral college. The New Hampshire election preceded each of the other nine states. We can locate only 3 institutions holding copies of this act; only one other copy has been traced at auction (Swann sale, 2 February 2006, lot 184). Bristol B6753.
