(PRESIDENTS--1840 CAMPAIGN.) Practical Operations of Whigs Catching Democrats: or, No Catch at All!!! Illustrated broadside, 16 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches; browned at edges, illustration printed out of alignment. Np, circa 1840

Additional Details

Produced by a supporter of Martin Van Buren and the Democratic party, this broadside mocks William Henry Harrison on every front. Harrison is shown attempting to catch voters with a barrel of hard cider underneath a log cabin. He wears a "Fort Stephenson" feather and exclaims "By Croghan I'd like to have caught one!!", both references to his most embarrassing moment from the War of 1812. Henry Clay and Daniel Webster cheer him in the background. The caption text mercifully explains all of the allusions in detail, and complains that the Whig party "embraces Abolitionism, Anti-Masonry, Federalism and every thing else but true old-fashioned Democracy." We have traced no other copies of this pungent political broadside, at auction, in libraries, or elsewhere.
