(PRESIDENTS--1841.) Harrison, William Henry. President Harrison's Inaugural Address. Letterpress broadside on silk, 23 1/2 x 18 inches; minor wear with slight loss on left border, minor foxing. (MRS) Baltimore, MD: J. Murphy, [1841]

Additional Details

This was the longest inaugural address in history: 8445 words and almost two hours. In the popular imagination, its delivery outdoors on a cool rainy day led directly to Harrison's death from pneumonia a month later. The address is a detailed vision statement, which offers evidence of the fine president that Harrison might have become had he survived. He announces his opposition to patronage appointments, and offered a strong take on the partisan politics which were overtaking the nation: "The violence of the spirit by which those parties are at this time governed must be greatly mitigated, if not entirely extinguished, or consequences will ensue which are appalling to be thought of." Provenance: sold by High Ridge Corner to the consignor, October 1982. One copy in OCLC, and none others known at auction.
