Additional Details

Whig candidate Henry Clay leads the Constitution carriage to Washington, leaving the broken-down ex-presidential animals Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, and John Tyler to die alongside Salt River. Van Buren blames his fate on Jackson's obsession with Texas: "Confound that old fool with his annexation! He has got me floored as well as himself." Weitenkampf, page 80; not in Reilly. None traced at auction, one in OCLC (at the American Antiquarian Society).
