Additional Details

Two rival inauguration balls were held for Polk on 4 May 1845, with this one regarded as the more aristocratic of the two. Among the board of managers were numerous prominent political figures, including Levi Woodbury, future president James Buchanan, Thomas H. Benton, Stephen Douglass, and John C. Calhoun. Tickets were sold to the public in advance. Polk managed to attend both events. We find no other examples of this invitation at auction or in OCLC; Texas Christian University has a stained example in their Pate Presidential Collection.
