(PRESIDENTS--1860 CAMPAIGN.) Letcher, John. Letter seeking election commissioners--and pointedly ignoring Lincoln. Printed circular letter, 10 x 8 inches, signed in type, plus integral blank; minor wear and foxing. With original stamped and postmarked envelope addressed to the clerk of a county court. Richmond, VA, 12 July 1860

Additional Details

Governor Letcher solicits nominations for presidential election commissioners from county officials. In the interest of fairness, he asks for "the names of a supporter of Breckenridge, a supporter of Douglas, and a supporter of Bell . . . who will command the respect and confidence of the people of your county." This covered three of the four parties, but not the upstart Republican Party candidate--it may have been difficult to find any Lincoln supporters in Virginia as it inched toward secession.
