(PRESIDENTS--1864 CAMPAIGN.) Rally for the Union as it Was! Letterpress leaflet, 8 1/4 x 11 inches, completed in manuscript in brown pencil; minor wear, folds, pencil calculations on verso. Holland Patent, NY, 19 September 1864

Additional Details

An advertisement for the lecture series of the Holland Patent Democratic Association, printed in nearby Utica. This example is completed in manuscript to promote a lecture by Waterville attorney Henry T. Utley to be held at a public hall in the neighboring village of Trenton. This sounds like the work of the Copperhead wing of the Democratic Party, hoping to restore the Union to "what it was"--with entrenched slavery throughout the South. We have not traced any other use of this "Rally for the Union as it Was" slogan, exactly, although variants remain in active use today. with--a manuscript notice of the same date to convene the Democratic electors of the town of Trenton for a caucus on 22 September. 4 1/2 x 8 inches.
