(PRESIDENTS--1864 CAMPAIGN.) Republican "Union Ticket" election ballot for California. Double-sided engraved ballot, 7 1/4 x 3 inches, with illustrated text on recto printed in red, and an engraving in blue and black on verso; minor wear, partial separations at folds. No place, [November 1864]

Additional Details

The ballot lists not only Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson at the top of the ticket, but also the 5 Republican electors for California and Donald C. McRuer of San Francisco for Congress. On verso is an illustration of the June 1864 naval duel off Cherbourg, France between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama. Sherman's capture of Atlanta was more commonly used as a Union rallying cry during the 1864 campaign, but might not have resonated as much in distant California as the sinking of a Confederate commerce raider.
