Additional Details

A cynical and disturbing effort by the Republican Party to secure the racist vote. It offers a long catalogue of relatively progressive Democratic moments: "Who gave negroes the right of suffrage in New York? The Democratic party. . . . Who helped to give free negroes the right to vote in Tennessee, under her Constitution of 1796? General Jackson. Was General Jackson a good Democrat? He generally passed as such." It concludes "All of these things were done by Democrats, and yet they deny being in favor of negro equality, and charge it upon Republicans--just like the thief who cries 'stop thief' the loudest." We are urged in a postscript to "send your Democratic friend one of these Valuable Documents." There are two states of this handbill, the other with the headline spaced "Democratic / Catechism / of Negro Equality / July 4th, 1863," priority undetermined; the main body of text is in the same setting of type in both variants. Afro-Americana 3033; Sabin 19499.
