Additional Details

The Young Men's Democratic Union Club was founded in 1852. This scrapbook documents their activities, mostly relating to the 1868, 1876 and 1880 presidential campaigns of losing candidates Horatio Seymour, Samuel Tilden, and Winfield Scott Hancock. It includes several printed meeting notices and other official club publications such as their constitution and bylaws. Most notable are an 1868 announcement for a speech by Tammany Hall mayoral candidate A. Oakey Hall, and an 1876 announcement for a "Grand Torch Light Parade" held in Albany. The album also includes extensive newspaper clippings on torchlight processions, speeches, and meetings, most notably several which prematurely celebrated President Elect Samuel Tilden in 1876.
