Depicts the exultation of newspaper editor Horace Greeley upon receiving the 1872 Democratic Party nomination, here represented by a butterfly he has seized by the wing. He brandishes a copy of his New York Tribune over his head. Greeley was soundly beaten by incumbent Ulysses S. Grant in the general election, and died even before the Electoral College met.
