Additional Details

We all know "Dewey Defeats Truman," but here is an earlier example of a newspaper which made a premature election call. The headline reads "The country saved. Grand results of the great elections. Tilden elected. Vance Governor. Hurrah for Democracy!" The 1876 Hayes-Tilden contest was closely contested and bitterly controversial. Although Tilden did win the popular vote, a dispute over the Electoral College votes was not settled for months.
