Additional Details

The Greenback Party was a third party which nominated James B. Weaver for the presidency. He drew 305,997 votes, good for 3.3% and a very distant third behind Garfield and Hancock. The party had a national presence, as shown by this poster for a rally held in Newburgh, Maine, a rural township near Bangor with 1,053 residents in 1880. The featured speaker was Alonzo Jackson Grover, a local Maine boy who had moved to Illinois; he had been a prominent abolitionist before the war, before becoming a Greenback Party activist.
