Additional Details

An allegorical depiction of the discovery of Vinland in 1000, the arrival of Columbus in 1492, Pilgrims, scenes from the Revolution, and an eagle picking apart the carcass of a lion, all surmounted by George Washington and the other early presidents atop a grand monument emblazoned with the state seals. A later impression of a print first published in 1858 as "Family Monument from the History of our Country"--the engraving date explains the notable absence of Lincoln. See Bushman, "America Discovers Columbus," page 125. No copies of any impression known at auction since 1916.
