Additional Details

An alternate cover for Time's presidential election issue, printed on the assumption that Humphrey might be able to beat Nixon. A banner across the title reads "Democratic Upset." Humphrey had trailed Nixon for most of the race, but surged with news that President Johnson had agreed to a bombing halt in Vietnam the week before the election.
The consignor states that her father was head of production for the press that printed the cover, and adds that "The plant had begun printing and assembling the magazine when they got the call to stop the presses because the cover was wrong . . . so they had to destroy thousands and thousands of the magazines--but my Dad kept this cover as a reminder of that day." An oddity on par with "Dewey Defeats Truman," though less well-known. No other copies are known to us in institutions or on the market.
