García Camba was a veteran Spanish colonial administrator who took command of Puerto Rico as Capitán General in January 1855. Soon afterwards, he mandated two additional years of military service for the troops stationed there. The artillery stationed at San Juan's San Cristóbal fortress mutinied against this treatment. For 24 tense hours they held the fortress, pointing its cannons toward the city. After their surrender, eight men were executed, but García Camba was removed from the captaincy soon after.
