second edition, inscribed by the author at the top of the preface. An extremely racist work, written as a reaction to a pamphlet published late in 1863 titled "Miscegenation," which ostensibly advocated the mixing of the races. It prompted Dr. J.H. Van Evrie, a radical Democrat, to issue an anonymous pamphlet in response, which he titled "Subgenation: The Theory of the Normal Relation of the Races-- An Answer to ''Miscegenation.''" Van Evrie expanded on his pamphlet to produce the present work.
