A report sponsored by then Senator Robert F. Wagner of New York. "Your investigator has probed numerous lynchings. His acquaintance with lynchers and the lynched extends over a lifetime. It is his judgement that countless Negroes are lynched each year. . . . In some lonely swamp a small body of men do the job formerly done by a vast howling bloodthirsty mob." There were more than 5000 reported lynchings in the U.S. between 1882, when records were first kept an 1940.
