Additional Details

Johann Joseph Most (1846-1906) was a German Marxist and anarchist who emigrated to New York in 1882. He coined the phrase "propaganda of the deed" to describe inspirational violence against the state, was associated with the Haymarket Square bombing, and spoke approvingly of the assassination of President McKinley. This portrait apparently was taken circa 1890, but was captioned on verso in 1906: "Dear Mother: This is a very fine picture of Herr Most, the famous anarchist, who departed this life when hot weather came on."
