Additional Details

This conference was organized by the Black Panthers as a means of uniting several wide-ranging radical and progressive groups, with participation from the Puerto Rican-based Young Lords Party, Students for a Democratic Society, Gay Liberation Front, Radicalesbians, Third World Gay Liberation Front, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, National Urban League, and many others. The conference drew several thousand participants and succeeded in building some bridges, although lesbian participants were not impressed by Huey Newton's pledge: "We will have our manhood, even if we have to level the face of the earth." A second convention held in Washington two months later fizzled and brought this movement to an end.

The first of the phone numbers listed here, 215-922-7902, belonged to the Philadelphia office of the Mayday and Philadelphia Resistance anti-war groups.

None others traced at auction.
