(RADICALISM.) The Anarchists from Haymarket to the Gallows. Printed pamphlet, 2 pages of text and 2 full-page illustrations, and 2 double-page illustrations on one 16 1/4 x 44-inch folding sheet; moderate foxing and soiling, worn with separations at folds. [Chicago, 1887]

Additional Details

An unusual illustrated celebration of the execution of the alleged Haymarket bombers on 11 November 1887. The title page has illustrations of Inspector Bonfield, the bomb used, and "Scene at the Haymarket Riot." The next page features portraits of accused bombers Schwab and Fielden, followed by a double-page illustration, "The Anarchists Funeral," with a centerpiece engraving by H.F. Vogel. On verso, the two text pages contain a variety of recycled news bits on unrelated topics, with a short celebratory piece on the Haymarket executions in slightly larger type, headed "All is Over--They Die Game," concluding that "Anarchism dies, the State lives, and Society has added another pillar to her tower of strength." Facing it is a double-page illustration, "The Anarchist's End." We trace no other examples of this production in OCLC or at auction; it may be an offprint of some kind from an unidentified magazine.
