Additional Details

Although the wrapper gives the date of 1868, the report and the map are both dated 1867. The pamphlet -- 40th Congress, 2d Session, Senate Misc. Doc. 9 -- includes communications from Meigs, U. S. Grant, and others, but features a lengthy report from Edwin F. Johnson, the Engineer-in-Chief of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The map, titled Map of the Country from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean, is derived from Coltons's railroad map of the West. For a lengthy discussion of this map, the importance of Johnson and the route of the third trans-continental railroad, see Wheat, Mapping the Transmissippi West, volume 5 pages 205-209.
