Additional Details

A scarce and handsomely illustrated technical publication. From the introduction: "The Compiler of the following work, during an extensive experience in his profession on several of the most important Canals and Rail Roads in the Northern States, has taken working drawings of the most useful of the tools and machinery used by Contractors working under his charge, and has also taken memoranda of the comparative economy of the use of these machines." Illustrations include end-dumper cars, turn tables, quarry cranes, and more. The title page illustration shows a dumper car unloading earth at the end of a track for grading. The plates were lithographed by Compton, Gibson & Co. of Buffalo, after drawings by J.S. Vernam, with the title page by Herman Gerlach. None traced in bibliographies or at auction.
