Additional Details

The Western Railroad Corporation was formed in 1833 to build a line from Worcester to Springfield, MA and beyond, which began operation in 1841. In 1854 they absorbed the Hudson & Berkshire Railroad. In 1867, they merged with the Albany & West Stockbridge Railroad and another line to form the new Boston & Albany Railroad. This collection includes deed books from all four of these railroad companies, most notably 4 volumes transcribing the original deeds of the Western Railroad Corporation, Hudson & Berkshire Railroad, and Albany & West Stockbridge Railroad from 1835 through 1842. A volume from the unrelated Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad is also included. These deeds define rail lines which in some cases are still in use today, and the indexes list hundreds of property owners who sold their land to make the lines possible. A more detailed inventory is available upon request.
