Additional Details

Just a month after the Golden Spike signified the completion of the transcontinental railroad, this local paper features two nice illustrated advertisements: "Union Pacific Railroad, Open from Omaha to Promontory Point . . . Connecting with the Central Pacific Railroad for Sacramento" and "Central Pacific Railroad--Commencing May 17 1869, express trains will run daily as follows." The front page reports on the resignation of Thomas Durant, the vice-president who promoted the project, from the Union Pacific.
