The New York & Albany Railroad was chartered in 1832, but construction was still not underway in 1838, nor had the route been finalized. In these letters, railroad president Charles Henry Hall and his commissioner Joseph Bloomfield discuss the route with Alexander Hamilton Holley (1804-1887) of Salisbury, CT (a future governor), who was trying to divert the line eastward to pass through his home town. Includes: 4 letters from Bloomfield to Holley, 1838; one from Hall to Holley; retained draft letters from Holley to Hall and Samuel Stevens, setting forth the case for Salisbury in detail; and a receipt for a subscription drive to survey the Salisbury-Sharon route.
