inscribed and signed by crowther "samuel crowther, bishop niger territory." Crowther (1809-1891) was the first African-Anglican bishop of Nigeria and translated the Bible into the Yoruba language. In 1821, Adjai and his mother were captured by Muslim Fulani traders and sold to Portuguese slave traders. They were rescued by the British Navy before the Portuguese left port and later released by the British in Sierra Leone. There, the young Adjai was taken in by the Anglican Church Society who trained him for the ministry.
