Additional Details

a rare letter from one of the african american community's most flamboyant and well-loved religious leaders. Marcelino Manuel da Graca (1881-1960) was born in the Cape Verde Island off the West Coast of Africa. When very young, his parents took Marcelino and his eight other siblings and moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, a Cape Verde settlement to this day. In 1921, da Graca founded the United House of Prayer for All People. He was noted for his mass baptisms, conducted at lakes and rivers. This letter is addressed to Elder P. H. Lawson, in Savannah, Georgia. "I am writing concerning Jacksonville. The pastor, Elder Perry intends to move North. He say (sic) that his wife is going with another man. I want you to see about this because it is killing the works." He asks Lawson to appoint another pastor, and says that he has a job waiting for Elder Perry when he comes north.
