Additional Details

Charles "Sweet Daddy Grace" (1884-1960) was one of the most successful black evangelists of the 20th century. Born in the Cape Verde islands, Grace emigrated to the U.S. in 1903. He founded the United House of Prayer in 1919 in Wareham, Massachusetts, but his real success came after the first of his enormous, mass baptisms in Charlotte, N. C. in 1925. The present photo shows one of these baptisms at which thousands attended outdoor services.
