Second edition (first published in 1852) of a work based on Isaac Watts, and including catechisms, prayers, and selections from the scriptures. Notes on the endpapers of this copy explain that it was "taken at Fredericksburg" in December 1862 by Corporal John Bainton of the 29th New Jersey Infantry, and then later owned by his son Ellsworth Bainton (1861-1892)--named after the first Union martyr of the Civil War. One other traced at auction of any edition, at a Swann sale, 26 February 2009, lot 86.
