Additional Details

Reverend John L. Link was associated with the Mt Hebron African Methodist Episcopal Church of Media, Pennsylvania, first organized in 1837 in a log cabin. Included here are numerous handwritten and typed sermons, minutes to the church elders' meetings, certificates, documents and an unpublished manuscript "Brief Summary of the Origin and History of the African Methodist Episcopal Church." In 1923, Reverend Link was among the chief organizers of the area's first NAACP branch, following the aftermath of an incident in which a white high school girl was assaulted. As it turned out, the guilty party was a mentally challenged Native American boy from a local institution. However, before that was determined, in a knee-jerk reaction, black homes were invaded, crosses were burned and a serious Klan presence began to be felt. Link's five page speech delivered before the resulting NAACP local is present, as are numerous sermons and other talks and articles: "Is suicide ever justifiable?" and a seven page address on the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
