Contemporary manuscript true copy of an order by General William Howe, to Colonel Phineas Fanning, ordering him to direct "all the King Captains or next Commanding Officers of the Militia, in the third Battallion in Suffolk County, to call their Several Companies together . . . to order all them that have taken up Arms against the King to lay down their Arms and to take the Oath of Allegiance to the King and to sign a Note of Submission Disclaiming and Rejecting the orders of Congress . . ." 1 page, single small 4to sheet; minor toning and foxing, usual folds. This order by General Howe was issued just days after the British victory in the Battle of Long Island and Washington's retreat to Harlem Heights, which allowed the British occupation of New York. Lancey commanded a regiment of Loyalist New Yorkers in the Battle of Long Island.<
