Additional Details

extremely important issue containing news of american independence and the first american map of the southern states. The terminal leaf includes the text of the 18 June 1776 Declaration of the Pennsylvania Provincial Congress advocating independence, followed several lines later by "July 2. This day the Hon. Continental Congress declared the United Colonies Free and Independent States." Although the Pennsylvania Magazine generally published the first Wednesday of each month (in this case July 3) the final lines on the terminal page of this issue apologize for the delayed publication suggesting it was printed several days later.
The map contained in this issue, which is engraved by Aitken, is entirely derivative of an earlier map by Kitchin published in the London Magazine. However, it is the earliest map of the Southeast published in America. Wheat & Brun cite an earlier proposed map by Bernard Romans, but based entirely from an advertisement and no such map is known to exist.
