"Our affairs to the South by all Information (for our Rider is not yet come in) stand better than could be expected . . . Washington's army actually consisted of 20000 and that Genl Howe's horses dye very fast on board of the Fleet. This they judge from the great number of horses they observe adrift along the shore. The Council have advised the Governor to call out 50 militia from [place name]; 50 from Ulster, 150 from Albany and 150 from Tryon to guard the Frontiers . . . <
