The film Ann Vickers was based on the popular 1933 novel by Sinclair Lewis about a prison reformer and a controversial judge who fall in love and have a child out of wedlock. It was made into a film that same year, starring several popular actors of the period. It was an instant box office hit, treating upon universal themes affecting women, including voting, social work and prison reform, adultery, divorce, and - quietly alluded to - abortion.
