SIGNED BY THE BEATLES BEFORE BEATLEMANIA (ROCK AND ROLL.) Part of a purse signed by the Beatles in 1962. Signed and inscribed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. Leather oval, 7 x 11 inches in diameter, with newspaper portrait of the band cello-taped in center and inscriptions surrounding it; clipping yellowed and peeling from backing, and a fourth inscription (presumably by Pete Best) erased from right side. [Liverpool, March 1962?]

Additional Details

The inscriptions read "To Sheila from John Lennon XXX," "To Sheila, love Paul XXX" and "To Shiela, love from George Harrison XXX." The newspaper clipping is from a March 1962 Liverpool newspaper, and depicts the band with their early drummer Pete Best. On verso can be seen an advertisement for the Odd Spot Club, with the Beatles booked to play on March 29.
This artifact of the early Beatles, while not dated, appears to date from a few months before the full onslaught of Beatlemania. The Beatles were a very popular local band in Liverpool at that point, and had done residencies in Hamburg. Best was replaced by Ringo Starr that August, and the band's first hit single followed in January 1963.
