Oswego, NY, 1907

Additional Details

The cane is carved with the date 1907, views of wild game, a view of soldiers captioned "San Juan 1898," and the colorful main inscription: "Thrice I've herd the coyote bark / Thrice I've herd the bob cat cry / Made by Dr. T.S. Hitchcock, Oswego, N.Y., for President Theo. Roosevelt / Oak from the old ship New Orleans at Sackett's Harbor, 1813." Theron Sylvester Hitchcock (1830-1918) was an Oswego dentist who had met Roosevelt briefly at the Oswego train station during a 1900 campaign visit, where he presented him with a carved Texas steer horn. We don't know when (or whether) he made the presentation of this quite remarkable mace to Roosevelt, but it will allow the purchaser to speak softly with impunity.
