(ROOSEVELT, THEODORE.) Root, Elihu. The President's Message to Workingmen. Letterpress broadside, 11 x 8 1/4 inches; folds, short closed tear in upper margin. (MRS) New York: Wynkoop Hallenbeck, [1906]

Additional Details

Issued in opposition to publisher William Randolph Hearst's campaign to be governor of New York. Secretary of State Root reminds voters of Roosevelt's longstanding enmity toward Hearst: "I say to you, with the President's authority, that he regards Mr. Hearst as wholly unfit for Governor, as an insincere, self-seeking demagogue, who is trying to deceive the workingmen of New York by false statements." He also quotes Roosevelt as blaming Hearst's yellow journalism for the assassination of President McKinley. This significant broadside does not appear in OCLC, and no other copies have been traced.
