The Needlework Guild of America was the favorite charity of First Lady Edith Kermit Roosevelt (1861-1948); she served as chair of its Long Island chapter. Offered here is a thread holder in the shape of an owl, crafted from purple and tan felt with button eyes, stuffed with 2 spools of thread and with 10 sewing needles stowed below, 7 inches long A transmittal note in Edith Roosevelt's hand and on "Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Senior" stationery reading in full "Best wishes for a successful card party" (unsigned) Undated provenance note from "Aunt Marion" to "Lois": "Here is that item Mrs. Roosevelt made for the Needlework Guild of America, quite a long time ago, November 1932" All housed in a box, 6 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 1 1/2, originally addressed by the American Stationery Company to Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt.
