presentation copies from queen victoria to the dowager countess of hardwicke with signed inscriptions by her in each volume except Volume 2. Inserted into Volume 3, following the inscription leaf, is a 4-page A.L.S. to the Countess Hardwicke from her son, dated 30 January 1878 informing her that he has "just received from the Queen the 3rd volume of the Life of the Prince Consort for you." Inserted in Volume 4 is an A. L. S. by the secretary of Queen Victoria. 2 pages, 8vo, July 1879 to Lady Hardwicke, forwarding this volume to her at the order of the Queen. Likewise, the Biography, printed for private circulation only, is also inscribed by Queen Victoria on the flyleaf. Uniformly bound with the set but extra-illustrated with the insertion of views and portraits, and in a separate slipcase.
