Additional Details

By the end of the first half of the nineteenth century, Georgia had been integrated into the Russian political system. This fascinating historical document, which focuses on the southern and western areas of the country, features approximately 40 medium-format views of its dramatic topography, 24 portraits of native people, and 3 spectacular panoramas (with a total of 8 views).

Lambrecht was apparently a French engineer who explored the Caucasus region for naphtha (a kind of bitumen), oil and minerals. His medium-format views are picturesque, depicting villages situated at the foot of mountains or along the Black Sea, itinerants traveling by camel whom he met en route, or instantaneous snapshots of St. Petersburg.

His photographs are infused with a pictorial style that might best be characterized as painterly. He demonstrates a keen sense of composition and appreciation for the drama of the region. And, his smaller studies depict the colorful and proud individuals who populated the country.
