LOOK magazine published Orkin's first major photo essay, Jimmy the Storyteller just a few years after she moved to New York City. In 1947 Orkin sent the series to Edward Steichen at the Museum of Modern Art, and he included her in every group photography show at the museum until his retirement, including his landmark The Family of Man.
