Additional Details

The American Dredging Company was founded in 1867, and remained in operation through most of the 20th century. Though based in Philadelphia, they undertook projects up and down the east coast, and sold dredging equipment to customers across the country--Texas, California, Virginia, and New England are all represented here. The letters are rich in technical detail and frequently discuss new innovations in the field. Among the noteworthy correspondents were several former generals (Union and Confederate), including Quincy Gillmore (2 Letters Signed, 1876 and 1880) and Robert Ransom (Autograph Letter Signed, 1880) of the U.S. Engineer Office, and Williams Carter Wickham (Letter Signed, 1880) of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.
