Additional Details

Adolph Sutro was a Jewish-American engineer who first came to prominence through this bold but successful plan to dig a massive drainage tunnel underneath the Comstock Lode. He also argues generally against what he saw as wasteful American mining practices. He later gained greater fame as a San Francisco mayor, book collector, and founder of the library which bears his name. "Perhaps the rarest and among the most important of Sutro's works"--Paher, Nevada 1925.
