Additional Details

This volume of previously published papers collected for the first time includes Hertz's "Ueber die Ausbreitungsgeschwindigkeit der elektrodynamischen Wirkungen" demonstrating that the rates of travel are the same for both light and electromagnetic waves (first published in Sitzungsberichte der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1888, 1. Halbband, 197-210).
Édouard Sarasin (1843–1917) was a Swiss independent physicist who served as president of the Société Helvetique des Sciences Naturelles and editor of the Archives des sciences physiques et naturelles, and who helped develop the theories of James Clerk Maxwell and Heinrich Hertz. In a footnote on page 14 of the present volume, in German, Hertz acknowledges the correctness of Sarasin's experimental results: "These experiments have proved the equality of the velocity in air and in wires, and have thus established the full agreement between experiment and theory. I consider these experiments to be conclusive . . . ."
With--Heinrich Hertz. Two volumes, each inscribed by Madam Hertz to Sarasin: Gesammelte Werke, Band III, Die Prinzipien der Mechanik in neuem Zusammenhange dargestellt; and Gesammelte Werke, Band I, Schriften vermischten Inhalts. Each 8vo, 1/4 morocco. Leipzig, 1894; 95; inscriptions: Np, July 1894; Np, nd • Édouard Sarasin and Lucien de la Rive. Interférences des ondulations électriques par réflexion Normale sur une paroi Métallique. Inscribed by Sarasin to "Monsieur Lambert" on the title-page. 8vo, wrappers. Geneva, 1893; inscription: Np, nd.
