The second, to Una [Hawthorne, Nathaniel's daughter], welcoming her back from a trip to England and inviting her to visit. 4 pages, 12mo, written on a folded sheet; ink identification in unknown hand at upper right of terminal page. Additional Details

July 17: ". . . Many of us have feared that you might all become European, and the country can no more afford to lose your papa than I could afford to lose you or Julian. . . .
"I am very glad too that you find your native country pleasant. . . . I had been away only a year, when I returned, I was continually annoyed by the bad manner of my country men and women. . . . But . . . good hearts are worth more than good manners.
"Just as soon as you can in the Autumn I want you to visit me. . . . I cannot hope that your Father and Mother will be so far erratic in their orbits, as to come to such an outcast place as Nantucket, but I suppose you will find some sober escort . . . ."
