(SCIENTISTS.) PEIRCE, BENJAMIN. Autograph Letter Signed, to author Edwin Percy Whipple ("My Dear Friend"), inquiring whether 10% of the sales of his lectures is a reasonable rate and worrying about leaving his wife enough money upon his death. 2 1/2 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; remnants of mounting to terminal page, horizontal fold. Cambridge, [23 March 1879?]
"A publisher has proposed to undertake the publication of my lectures. He offers me ten per cent upon the sales. Is that right or ought I to stand out for more? If I had not a wife, who might outlive me, I would not have anything to do with this . . . . But if I were to pass away today, I should scarcely leave enough to pay the charges of putting this body into the charge of the worms. . . ."
