Additional Details

John is described as "about 21 years old, copper color, about five feet 8 inches high, was brought to Richmond by [an] agent for Charles Kloman, of Washington City. Said boy has been employed in some one of the Hotels in Washington City, and will, in all probability, make for that place."

Charles Kloman (1820-1878), John's earlier owner before Cromwell, was a well-known Washington tavern-keeper. Cromwell's agents in tracking down John were the Richmond slave-dealing firm of Davis & Lee of Richmond--not THAT Davis & Lee, though the names are evocative. No other examples traced in OCLC or elsewhere.
